Quench your Thirst
By Mackenna Scripps
mscripps@mail.smu.edu
With temperatures rising, we all need to brace ourselves for Dallas’ hot weather. Intense sun can be very drying and dehydrating to your skin. Just as your body needs water on a hot day, your skin needs a drink too! I’ve been using Clinique’s Moisture Surge for three years, and it is the best product I own.
This light cream/gel hydrates the skin for a full 24 hours and helps moisturize, but is also oil-free. You can even add over makeup, if more hydration is needed. It can be found at Sephora for $37. Give your skin something refreshing this summer.
Spring 2013: Pretty in Pastel
By Courtney Spalten
cspalten@smu.edu
Now that March is over, the spring season is definitely upon us. Some of this year’s hottest trends were perfect to sport during the Easter weekend.
This spring, pastel hues are showing up everywhere. Pastels are a great way to incorporate color into your wardrobe without going too bright. These delicate colors are the perfect way to revamp your wardrobe for spring.
Luckily, there are plenty of options available to allow you to rock pastel colors without looking like an Easter egg.
This pleated blouse in a pretty shade of powder blue will help kick off your spring wardrobe.
This blazer incorporates two major spring trends, pastel and lace, into one feminine piece.
Work the trend into your accessories with this light pink Tory Burch crossbody bag.
These sandals work multiple pastel hues into the design.
This opaque lilac shade is so popular, it is currently out of stock on the Sephora website.
Be the brightest in class
By Jordan Moore
mooreja@smu.edu
Late nights in the library, early-morning alarms and long days of class can dim our skin, particularly around the eyes. Lilac lids and puffy peepers are never desired, but sometimes lack of sleep gets the better of us. Thankfully, Benefit has produced a product that helps brighten dark circles and calm any beauty calamities. It’s called It’s Potent! Eye Cream.
Just a touch of the smooth, scentless cream underneath the eyes and within minutes your eyes seem wider, brighter and better than before.
You can purchase the magic mix in Sephora stores or online, here.
This little pot really is filled with a potent power, as the name suggests.
Never let a lack of sleep get the best of you again, and remain the brightest in your class, no matter the time of day.
Spray and sprint
By Jordan Moore

For college students, time is everything. Getting to class on time is a challenge in itself, and sometimes 8 a.m. classes don’t allow for a full wash and blowout. For days when you may want to let your hair down, but don’t have the time to get a full shower, there’s another option: dry shampoo.
You might be skeptical, and you may be asking, what about residue? What about texture? Does it really work? As a personal testimony, I can say Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo is the only one that has worked for me.
For a quick fix that leaves no white behind and brushes through completely, you can get the spritz from Sephora stores, including online, here. You can purchase it in one of two sizes: 1.4 or 3.2 ounces.
With a light, clean, sweet lemon scent, Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo is the perfect perk for girls on the go.
OCD? No, OCC
By Farah Abdelqader

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics is known for being one of the very few brands that is PETA-certified. From this 100-percent vegan and cruelty-free company comes the highly pigmented, colorful and long-wearing lip stain known as Lip Tar. These lip stains come in over 35 colors, each with it own individual lip brush for perfect application. These stains are gorgeous when applied correctly. But due to the high concentration of pigment in the product, it’s recommended to use a lip liner as well as a lip primer before applying the actual product to keep the lips from drying out and keep them looking smooth. Lip Tars retail for $18 each.
Emerald City
By Jordan Moore
Pantone has officially highlighted its hot color swatch for the year, in accordance with the clothes on the runway: Emerald.
2013 marks the beginning of the Emerald City Era, offering everyone the opportunity to take a trip to Oz with this prized color being offered in every beauty product imaginable.
Sephora, the beauty retailer, is drenched in this glittering gem of green, thanks to its collaboration with Pantone, the leading authority when it comes to color. In its stores, Sephora is showcasing the pick-of-the-year on display tables, stocking it on shelves and even has its employees wearing it. Furthermore, the beauty retailer’s website provides an entire section for shoppers in search of all things green.
Any of the items featured above can be purchased through Sephora. I just bought the Color Charged Graphic Lacquer. I’m currently waiting for my old polish to chip so I can paint pretty with the trendy new tone. I’m looking forward to flaunting my fingertips so I get in touch with the new season’s style.
For more information on the inspiration behind the season’s palette pick, look here to embark on the yellow brick road for your emerald quest.
The path to the Emerald City will wind its way on into next year, as predicted by fashion forecasters, and as proven on the runways in the recent New York Fashion Week.
THERE IN A FLASH!

Have you been searching for a quick and easy-to-use foundation? Christian Dior has the product for you. Dior Airflash is a spray foundation — but don’t try spraying the foundation directly on your face. Instead, it’s best applied to your face with a kabuki brush (pictured below, from Sephora). You can live out your geisha girl fantasies and no one will ever know.
Glory to Trick & Treatment!
by Tanisha Boyd
tnboyd@smu.edu
My new Holy Grail makeup product is Soap & Glory’s Trick and Treatment Under Eye Dark Circle Concealer. The brightening formula combats under eye circles in two ways:
First. the “trick” — a yellow pigment mixture neutralizes dark areas and contains light-reflecting tones to conceal. After applying foundation, the effect is a bright under-eye area.
Then, the “treatment” — special peptides containing Haloxyl™, an ingredient clinically proven to lighten dark circles, treat the problem and fight dark circles from within.
I recently had a makeup artist try this out on me at Sephora in NorthPark Center. I’ve tried other under-eye concealers that didn’t seem to do the job. As an African-American, I looked at the makeup artist like she was crazy when she asked if she could try it out on me, but the result was a welcome surprise.
I found the coverage to be “buildable.” The concealer alone definitely goes on yellow. But you can either mix your own foundation/tinted moisturizer with it before applying. Or layer your foundation over the concealer.
This is by far my favorite new product. Not only is it suitable for all skin tones, I’m definitely beginning to notice that my dark circles are fading. No waiting for Halloween for this kind of trick or treat!
Soap & Glory products are sold at Sephora stores nationwide and at sephora.com.
Cold Weather Drying You Out?
By Lexie Hammesfahr
lhammesfah@smu.edu
…I’ve got the solution for that.
As I was walking through Neiman Marcus the other day, browsing the makeup counters and trying to find a new lipgloss that isn’t sticky on the lips, I came across the AmorePacific counter. The saleswoman asked if I wanted to try some of the products. Never one to say no to a free sample, I tried the Rejuvenating Serum. Wow. Not only did it smell amazing, it was one of the smoothest lotions I have ever tried. I decided to splurge on it, despite the pricey cost ($100), and it’s been worth every penny. Even though the container is so skinny you might question how much lotion you’re actually buying, it holds more than you think; and a little goes a long way. Instead of using distilled water as a main ingredient, AmorePacific uses bamboo sap to help maintain cell regeneration and hydration. Bonus: It also fights against premature aging! If you can afford to splurge on a beauty product for the holidays, I would highly recommend purchasing this lotion. It’s perfect to fight against the wear and tear on your skin from the cold weather!!
Be bold: Diorshow mascara
By Logan May
ljmay@smu.edu

Make lashes pop with this big, bold mascara. $25 at Sephora. http://www.sephora.com/diorshow-mascara-P40404
Make-up artists behind the scences at the world’s chicest runway shows inspired this mascara, which is designed to make any girl’s lashes “va-va-voom” vampish. The ultra-thick brush and blackest-of-black charcoal tone keep lashes plump, curvy and dynamic all day long. A must-have item for the makeup bag of any career girl or college intern who wants to look put together for the office, as well as glamorous for that evening event.
