The New Nail

By Brooke Bordelon

There was once a time, not too long ago, when choosing one’s nail color meant perusing (for more time than we may care to admit) walls of shiny little bottles filled with a myriad of exciting colors just waiting to adorn our fingertips. However, this simple ritual has gone out the window with the introduction of nail art into fall fashion.

Models on the fall runways boasted nails adorned with wild designs and 3D accents. Some, like those at Kate Spade, sported relatively tame pink nails with a delicately placed gold stud near the cuticle. Others went a step further.   Houghton designer Katharine Polk, for instance, sent models down the runway with nails cloaked in intricate lace cuttings.

This trend is not only for those with access to a highly trained manicurist though. Essie brand nail polish has come out with a product called “sleek sticks” which are pre-cured appliques that mimic a professional 3-D manicure. They also offer a line of magnetic, yup magnetic, nail polishes, which, when exposed to a magnet in the bottle’s lid, transform one’s boring old flat polish into a snakeskin pattern. So, fellow nai aficionados, prepare yourselves for a wacky, wild fall of nail art.
